I always wanted to be a magazine editor
Growing up in the 1990’s in a small farming town in rural Minnesota, magazines were my only window to the rest of the world.
First, what is a substack?
I wondered the same thing about a year ago. I figured that and a few more things out and am here to share my knowledge with you!
I always wanted to be a magazine editor
Growing up in the 1990’s in a small farming town, all I had were fashion magazines and catalogs. I would come home from school, check the mailbox, make a cheese roll-up in the microwave and dive into reading a magazine.
Tearing out pages to wallpaper my room, cutting out images to glue on boxes, and of course reading everything that seemed interesting.
Where else was I going to learn that I needed three black dresses and a day-to-night look?
1. Everything is figure-out-able
I have spent my life adoring the beautiful, bold, and fancy lifestyle from the pages of books and magazines to the screens of Pinterest and Instagram. After almost 20-years in corporate America I realized working in the impersonal world of a corporation was not good for my mental health. Good news; with the technology today, we no longer need permission from a publisher or money from advertiser to publish!
2. Why trust me? Who am I?
With an eye for looking good in clothing, a knack for cooking, and a true passion for connecting with people. I want to share what I have learned over the years with those who might appreciate it.
I am Farien, rhymes with Karen. The story of my name may be a topic for a future post, but let’s say it came from a now closed store in my storybook town of Red Wing, Minnesota.
I wanted out of my small town as soon as possible, leaving to attend college when I was still in high school. I graduated with an associate degree before I graduated high school, and thanks to Minnesota, it was free! I went on for a bachelor’s degree starting out in fashion design, quickly learning I am not competitive enough nor skilled enough for that. See: sewing through thumb in future posts.
I graduated and went on to my first job at Target Corporate, living alone downtown Minneapolis. I met my husband and was married within 9 months. He has stuck by my side while I took 20 years to figure out corporate America is not for me.
Meanwhile, I became an avid reader, with over 2,000 titles marked as read on GoodReads. Curiosity and learning are two of my driving forces. Stories from my 20’s and 30’s will be weaving into posts on this substack.
